Hi Rupert! I also took up drawing a few years ago, but sadly I don't get the drive so often nowadays. You have a couple of examples here: https://pinchito.es/2024/propositos-2024 I would encourage you to get a teacher, I was lucky enough to get a professional to comment my drawings on WhatsApp and his help was invaluable. And above all, enjoy!

Good work, Alex! My wife is a jewellery designer who is retraining as an interior designer; my oldest daughter is a fashion design student; and my youngest daughter is finishing the artistic baccalaureate and wants to study animation. I can get lots of slightly condescensing feedback on my amateurish drawings whenever I want!

Nice! If you ever get stuck consider someone who is more dispassionate and can tell you without fear of hurting your feelings. Getting strangers to criticize you is damn hard in today's world.

Oh and by the way, your drawing is nice, you can see the resemblance (from your pictures). I would have used more shadows to convey depth.

Thanks for the compliment and the feedback!

Your habit of closing comments on any post that's likely to draw disagreement is making me very frustrated. I understand why you do it; you don't want to wade through troll mobs and similar. But from my POV, it makes for a read-only blog rather than a conversation.

Your ideas would probably benefit from feedback - most people's do. Mine would certainly benefit from dialogue with a smart person like you who's experienced a rather different political environment from me.

OTOH, I completely understand why you don't want to cope with the internet troll factory. My solution is to blog somewhere a lot less well known than substack, which also supports finer grained control over who can comment. I don't reach The Masses (TM), but I don't aspire to be an Influencer (TM); those who aren't inclined to thinking or dialogue are welcome to find someone else to tell them The Truth (TM), and leave me in peace.

Also, do you subscribe? You can always hit reply to the email. Your answer will go straight to my Hotmail; and I check my junk folders regularly. I'm always happy to carry on the conversation over email. I usually can't reply immediately on Saturday mornings, but I will see the message and get to it when I can.

Ah, I didn't know that the reply-to address on the emailed posts would go anywhere.

No worries about being slow responding to email. I'm in a constant state of catch-up on email myself.

Please open a line of communication! Always happy to chat to good people. It's the bots and the whataboutists that annoy me...

I appreciate the feedback. Dealing with a Russian troll army defending Catalan independence a few years back was exhausting. I really don't want to go through that again. My problem is that I feel compelled to answer every comment. I wonder if there is a way of turning off the notifications on Substack?
